OpenAI Signs $38 Billion Cloud Deal with Amazon

Seattle — OpenAI Expands Cloud Power with Amazon Partnership

Artificial-intelligence pioneer OpenAI has entered a $38 billion, seven-year deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to access massive cloud-computing infrastructure and advanced Nvidia GPUs. The agreement, announced Monday, highlights OpenAI’s push to secure large-scale computing power essential for developing its next-generation AI models.

The new partnership signals a strategic move to diversify away from Microsoft, which has long been OpenAI’s main cloud provider. The ChatGPT creator is now strengthening ties with multiple tech giants to meet soaring global demand for AI computing.

A Seven-Year Alliance for the AI Future

Under the agreement, OpenAI will gain access to Nvidia’s powerful graphics processors through AWS data centers worldwide. CEO Sam Altman said the deal reflects the company’s long-term strategy to expand AI access and reliability.

“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” Altman said. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the global infrastructure that will power this next era of artificial intelligence.”

The deal positions AWS as a key player in the AI arms race, competing directly with Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud.

    Reducing Reliance on Microsoft

For years, Microsoft had an exclusive cloud contract with OpenAI, providing the computing backbone for ChatGPT and other large-language models. That agreement ended in early 2025, allowing OpenAI to explore partnerships with other cloud providers.

The Amazon collaboration follows a recent corporate restructuring at OpenAI, which shifted from a non-profit to a capped-profit structure, granting it more operational and financial freedom. Analysts say the move gives OpenAI flexibility to raise capital and pursue new alliances.

    A Wave of Mega Deals

The AWS partnership adds to OpenAI’s growing list of high-value agreements. In 2025 alone, the company has signed over $1 trillion in cumulative deals with Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, and Nvidia to secure advanced hardware for AI training.

According to Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners, “OpenAI’s path to leadership depends on getting access to as much computing power as possible.”

These collaborations show that the world’s leading AI firms are investing heavily in one another, creating a complex web of partnerships and rivalries across the tech industry.

    Profitability Concerns and Market Impact

Despite its success, OpenAI remains unprofitable, reportedly losing around $12 billion last quarter due to massive spending on research and compute resources. Yet, investor optimism remains high. Following the Amazon announcement, Amazon’s market value surged by $140 billion, reaching a record high.

AWS CEO Matt Garman said, “AWS is uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s vast AI workloads and future growth.”

Economists warn that the wave of billion-dollar AI investments could trigger a speculative bubble. However, Altman insists the company’s growth is driven by real-world adoption: “It’s unprecedented investment — but also unprecedented revenue acceleration,” he told the BBC.

    Conclusion

The $38 billion deal between OpenAI and Amazon underscores the rising global competition for AI infrastructure. It cements AWS’s role as a leading cloud provider for advanced machine learning and marks OpenAI’s evolution into a fully independent powerhouse.

As reported earlier by Pashto Times, this alliance could reshape the tech industry’s balance of power — driving innovation while testing the limits of AI’s rapid expansion.
